Willesborough
Lees & HinxhillThis area of
wetland, pasture, rough grassland, scrub and woodland covers nearly
100 acres and is a rich area for wildlife. Scarce plants that can be
found include white sedge, recorded at only two other sites in Kent.
The area is also good for mosses and liverworts. Grassland here is
also of interest, but in places is becoming invaded with scrub.
Uncommon shrubs include alder buckthorn and eared willow.
The woodlands - Sweet Willow Wood and Flowergarden
Wood - are dominated by sweet chestnut, but there are also mature
beech and oak trees and alder carr in places. A number of
warblers have been recorded, including nightingale.
Walk through this area, past Flowergarden Wood,
with its exotic Turkey Oaks, and you will come to the tiny village
of Hinxhill, with its lovely church. The Hinxhill area offers many
good walks and a feel of real rural charm.
Access:
From Kennington Road in Willesborough, turn onto Sandy Lane,
then take a public footpath - this will lead you across the Lees.
