News updates - Spring 2004
Your Heritage
The Green Corridor Project has been
awarded £50,000 by Your Heritage (Lottery) to implement a number of
interpretive projects. These will include working with community groups in
Ashford, art-based projects, and programmes of events and activities.
Thanks to Rail Link Countryside Initiative and Ashford Borough Council for
their support with the application.
Elbow grease…
Students from Instant Muscle entry to
employment course, lived up to their name and helped to repaint cycle
barriers belonging to Ashford Borough Council. The cycle barriers will be
installed at Local Nature reserve sites and will help the safe passage of
both pedestrians and cyclists through these busy areas. The designs of the
barriers reflect the riverside showing both reeds and dragonflies.
Mammal Mania
Small mammal surveys were carried out in
conjunction with the Kent Mammal Group at Aylesford Green and Buxford
Meadow. Young people from the Millennium Volunteers and the 6th
Ashford Cub and Beaver group helped to gather the results. Species
recorded included common shrew, pigmy shrew, woodmouse and bank vole.
Voila! Voles found near International
Station
A recent water vole survey has revealed
water vole signs through parts of the Ashford Green Corridor. The general
public rarely sees this elusive creature but water voles leave distinctive
signs, including feeding remains and latrine sites, the latter also being
used to mark territories along the river.
